It was a dark night for Chelsea as Jose Mourinho's men bows out of the Capital One Cup. Meanwhile, Edin Dzeko and Aleks Kolarov were both on the scoresheet as in-form Manchester City moves two steps closer to the trophy.

It was an evening that will not depart the memories of Chelsea fans and players in a hurry as Sunderland progressed at the detriment of the London club after a tough 120 minutes of football.

Cattermole's controversial own goal in the 46th minute looked to have sent Chelsea into the semi final, but Chelsea paid for not doubling their advantage when Borini scored from an Altidore's rebound just moments away from the final whistle. Borini would have killed the game off some minutes later but a fine defending piece from Cahill made sure that the Stadium of light would stand still for another 30 minutes of exciting football. Swansea loanee, Ki was the man that had the final say over the game when he set the home crowd to jubilation late in the extra time with a composed finished to beat Mark Scharzer for the second time in the game.

Although, Chelsea started the game brilliantly, but their lack of luck and composure in front of goal was a major set back as they missed some couple of great chances in both halfs of the game. After the first goal, Chelsea had more than enough chances to put the match to rest but failed to do so, had the Blues gotten a second goal, Borini's late strike would have been just a consolation.

The results means Chelsea are
out of the Capital One Cup and it is not an ideal build up as Roman Abrahimovic boys faces Arsenal next in the league.

Elsewhere, Manchester City progressed to their third Capital One Cup semi-final in fivey year with a fine 3-1 win over Liecester city away from the Etihad Stadium. As expected, City controlled the game right from the first whistle till the final one.

Aleks Kolarov's superb free kick from 30 yard was enough to establish a first half lead for the Citizens. Bosnian Edin Dzeko doubled the visitors' advantage just before the break with a close range header.

In the 53rd minute, Dzeko killed off the game with his second of the night which ensured that Manuel Pellegrini's men will be playing in the last four of the competition.

Despite not posing much a goal threat, the home team got a consolation late in the game through Loyld Dyer. The game ended 1-3 in favour of Manchester City.

Manchester City will be hoping to take their form into the league this weekend as they are keen on disposing Arsenal from the top of the table
