Can Atletico Madrid Go All The Way This Year? Arsenal,Manchester City,Welbeck Can Atletico Madrid Go All The Way This Year? For years now there has only ever been two teams in Spain challenging each other year in and year out for the LIGA BBVA title and be crowned the best in Spain, these two where obviously Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
But this season another team has come out of the woodwork and dared to pose a serious title challenge to the two Spanish giants; Atletico Madrid.
Last week we saw the latter Madrid team trash Real Sociedad at home 4-0 hence putting them at the summit of the Spanish league three points ahead of the Catalan giants Barcelona. Of course this is an amazing feat for a team that has been so long in the shadow of Real and Barcelona but we must ask ourselves the question, how did this happen and can they go all the way and win the title?
For me there are many answers to the first question and they all lie in different positions on the pitch. For starters up front they have Diego Costa, who has netted an astonishing 20 goals in 22 games, then there's also the experienced former Barcelona front-man David Villa, who has netted 11 domestic goals and assisted three.
In midfield they have the Manchester United target Koke, who is only 22 and already a regular starter for the club, he has played very well behind Costa assisting nine goals and scoring four himself.
As any football fan knows a team's attack is only as good it's defence, which has proven to be Atletico Madrid's downfall for so many years. They've consistently had a great attack but are usually lacking somewhat in defence.
This year it has been a different story. With a solid back-four featuring Diego Godin, Miranda, Felipe Luis and Juanfran and with on-loan Belgian shot stopper Thibaut Courtois they have only conceded 14 goals this season; the best record in the league.
So with all that in mind I can now answer my final question, can they go all the way and take the crown from last year's winners Barcelona? Sadly I think it is a bridge too far for Atletico.
Although they have great players in most positions they do not have the squad depth Barcelona and their Madrid rivals Real have. If a player gets injured or suspended for either of those clubs they always have players in the background to replace them and still make an impact. Atletico sadly they don't have that privilege and with the recent Copa del Rey loss to their neighbours at the Bernabeu we have seen how they may fair in future big team encounters.
To sum up, in my opinion Atletico will not win the league this year but if they keep their current big players next season and add one or two more maybe they will stand a chance in the coming years.
